Boil Water Notice Issued For Lobinstown Public Supply After Bacteria Found
Customers in Lobinstown have been instructed to boil tap water for drinking, preparing food and brushing teeth until further notice after increased bacteria levels were detected in the supply on 06 October 2026.
Uisce Éireann said the precautionary Boil Water Notice, introduced following consultation with the HSE, covers approximately 93 customers in Lobinstown and nearby areas. Residents can check if their property is affected by visiting the Water Quality section of water.ie and entering their Eircode, or by calling the 24/7 customer care line on 1800 278 278. A map of the affected area is available on the Supply and Service Updates pages of the website.
Drinking water experts are working to restore normal water quality and remove the notice as quickly and safely as possible, in ongoing consultation with the HSE. Uisce Éireann says its drinking water standards are among the strictest in Europe and include significant safety margins, and that precautionary notices are issued where monitoring indicates potential risks. Water is safe to consume once it has been boiled and allowed to cool. Enda Cully Uisce Éireann, said: "We know how important a safe and reliable water supply is to everyday life and we understand the inconvenience this notice will cause for customers, families, businesses and community groups across the area.
"Protecting public health is always our top priority. As soon as our monitoring identified issues affecting water quality, we acted immediately in consultation with the HSE to put this notice in place as a safety measure.
"Our teams are doing everything possible to resolve the issue and restore normal water quality as quickly as possible. We would like to thank the community for their patience and cooperation while this essential work is carried out."
What customers should do: Bring water to a vigorous rolling boil and allow it to cool before use. Use only boiled water for drinking, preparing drinks, making ice, brushing teeth, and washing uncooked foods such as salads. Unboiled water may be used for washing, bathing and flushing toilets, but should not be used for brushing teeth or gargling. Domestic water filters will not make water safe to drink. Take extra care when bathing children to ensure they do not swallow water, and handle boiled water carefully to avoid burns and scalds.
Updates will be provided on water.ie, via X @IWCare, and through optional real-time text alerts. Uisce Éireann's customer care team is available around the clock on 1800 278 278.
