Dublin City Council To Debate Backing Garvaghy Road Residents
Dublin City Council is set to consider formal support for Garvaghy Road residents at tomorrow's full council meeting.
Sinn Féin has lodged an emergency motion backing the community and calling on the Orange Order not to parade down Garvaghy Road.
Cllr. Daithí Doolan, Sinn Féin Group Leader on Dublin City Council, said: "Garvaghy Road residents have a right to live in peace. No community should be out under siege by unwanted sectarian marches.
"No Orange Order march proceeded down the Garvaghy Road for 28 years, and this has ensured that the violence and fear from previous marches has been avoided.
"Forcing an Orange Order through this community will shatter this peace.
"Sinn Féin have tabled an Emergency Motion for tomorrow's Dublin City Council meeting calling on the Orange Order not to march down Garvaghy Road.
"I am urging all city councillors to support this important motion. "This is a great opportunity for the largest local authority in Ireland to send out a clear message of support and solidarity to the residents of Garvaghy Road."
According to the draft motion, the council expresses full support for the right of Garvaghy Road residents to live without the threat of Orange Order parades along their street.
It also notes that there has been peace on the road for 28 years because no Orange Order march has proceeded there, which has helped prevent the violence and fear associated with previous parades.
On that basis, the motion urges the Orange Order to re-route its planned march away from Garvaghy Road.
It further calls on the Lord Mayor to write to An Taoiseach, asking him to contact the Orange Order, the Chief Constable of the PSNI and the British Secretary of State to secure agreement to re-route this contentious march for this year and in the future.
