Gardaí Reclassify Disappearance Of Navan Man Mark Duffy As Murder
Gardaí in Navan have reclassified the disappearance of Mark Duffy, who was last seen on 3 October 2022, as a murder investigation. The decision was confirmed on Wednesday 30 September 2026 following a review of all information gathered to date by a dedicated team based at Navan Garda Station and led by a Senior Investigating Officer.
An open and active inquiry has been maintained since Mr Duffy, 43, went missing. A family liaison officer remains assigned to his family, who were updated by the investigation team this morning.
In the weeks leading up to his disappearance, Mr Duffy had been living homeless in a tent in Navan town. On 3 October 2022 he was at the Post Office in Johnstown Shopping Centre, Navan, at 10:50am. Later that day, at approximately 2:45pm, CCTV recorded him on Commons Road, Navan, walking into McDermotts Villas housing estate. This is the last confirmed sighting of him. He was reported missing on 13 October 2022 by a concerned family member. Subsequent enquiries established there have been no sightings since 3 October 2022, his phone has not been used, and there is no indication he left the country.
Search operations were carried out in the Navan area and along the River Boyne, but no trace of Mr Duffy or evidence of his whereabouts was found.
Mark Duffy is described as 5ft 8in tall, of broad build, with brown hair and blue eyes. He walked with a noticeable limp at the time. When last seen, he was wearing dark clothing with a cream hoody underneath, the hood worn outside his jacket.
Gardaí are appealing to anyone who saw or spoke to Mark on 3 October 2022, or in the days beforehand, to come forward. If you were in the Commons Road area around 2:45pm that day, or know where he went after entering McDermotts Villas, please contact investigators.
Members of the public are urged not to dismiss any detail, no matter how small, as it could be of value to the inquiry.
Anyone with information is asked to contact Navan Garda Station on (046) 9079930, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111, or any Garda station.
