Dublin Lord Mayor Welcomes E-Scooter Age Ban Coming Into Force

Lord Mayor of Dublin, Daryl Barron, has welcomed the introduction of the age restriction, which is intended to improve safety and promote responsible e-scooter use as the vehicles become more common across the capital's transport network.

The measure forms part of broader efforts to enhance safety on Ireland's roads and in public spaces, alongside initiatives such as Grace's Law (introduced following the tragic death of Grace Lynch) and strengthened powers to tackle the dangerous use of scramblers in public places.

In a statement, Lord Mayor Daryl Barron said: "I welcome the introduction of these regulations, which are an important step in ensuring e-scooters can be used safely and responsibly on our roads. E-scooters have the potential to play a valuable role in helping people travel around our city in a sustainable and convenient way. However, as with all forms of transport, safety must come first.

"Today's changes, together with wider road safety measures such as Grace's Law, demonstrate a commitment to protecting people in our communities and creating safer public spaces for everyone. By setting clear rules and expectations, we can reduce risk and encourage responsible behaviour among all road users.

"These new rules will help to protect young people, pedestrians and all road users, while providing clarity around the safe use of e-scooters. I encourage everyone using an e-scooter to familiarise themselves with the regulations and to respect other road users at all times.

"Creating safer streets is a shared responsibility. By understanding and following these rules, we can help make Dublin a safer and more accessible city for everyone."
