Murphy Backs Taoiseach’s Unity Initiative, Urges Action

Sinn Féin Senator Conor Murphy has welcomed Taoiseach Micheál Martin's pledge to launch a fresh initiative to examine constitutional change, saying the move must lead to a properly resourced, inclusive plan to prepare for Irish unity.

Seanadóir Murphy said: "I welcome the Taoiseach's shift in position and his willingness to join the discussion about planning for Irish unity. His recognition that a comprehensive programme of work is required is a positive development that must now be matched by action.

"People deserve clear, trustworthy information about what unity would mean for their health services, pensions, jobs, public services and rights. That requires a serious examination of the economic opportunities, transition costs and practical challenges.

"The Taoiseach is right that unity requires persuasion and democratic consent. That strengthens the case for preparing now, so people can assess a credible proposition before being asked to vote.

"However, he should not dismiss the discussion already taking place as nationalists gathering to congratulate ourselves. People from the unionist community, and many others from unionist backgrounds, are already contributing to the discussion about planning for Irish unity. Their contribution should be welcomed, respected and built upon.

"This process must also engage those who favour the existing constitutional arrangements and those who remain undecided. Their identities, rights and concerns must be respected. But inclusion cannot mean giving any political party or section of society a veto over preparations for constitutional change.

"Shared Island co-operation and reform of the northern institutions have obvious value. Neither removes the need to prepare for the constitutional choice provided for in the Good Friday Agreement.

"As head of the Irish Government, the Taoiseach has a major responsibility to lead preparations for Irish unity. He should now set out the remit, resources and timetable for his proposed initiative. A Citizens' Assembly would provide an important forum for informed, inclusive discussion alongside the detailed research required.

"Sinn Féin will engage constructively and press for this work to begin without delay, giving people an informed choice about their future."
