September Gas Demand Down 10% As Gas-Fired Power Falls

Gas demand in Ireland declined by 10 per cent month-on-month and 3 per cent year-on-year in September, with reduced consumption in the electricity generation sector accounting for much of the monthly drop.

Despite the overall fall, several areas saw rising usage as the country shifted from summer into cooler weather, when heating needs typically pick up. Month-on-month, demand from the education sector jumped 89 per cent, while usage at leisure and sports arenas and in office complexes each rose by 23 per cent.

Gas Networks Ireland's Director of Strategy and Regulation, Edwina Nyhan, said: "September marks the transition from the summer months into autumn and we typically see gas demand begin to increase across several sectors as the requirement for heating grows. While overall gas demand was down in September, largely due to lower demand from gas-fired electricity generation, we saw increases across a number of sectors as demand began to follow its normal seasonal pattern."

In power generation, gas demand was 16 per cent lower than in August. Gas-fired plants supplied 36 per cent of electricity in September, down from 44 per cent the previous month. Wind increased its share to 35 per cent from 18 per cent in August, while solar provided 5 per cent, compared with 8 per cent in August.

In transport, demand for compressed natural gas (CNG) rose by 12 per cent year-on-year since September 2025, reflecting the continued uptake of CNG as a lower-carbon alternative to diesel for heavy goods vehicles and commercial fleets.
