Defence Minister Commemorates Naval Service’s 80th Anniversary

Ireland's Naval Service is marking its 80th anniversary this year, having been established on 1 September 1946.

To mark the milestone, serving personnel, veterans and their families are gathering today at Haulbowline for a family day celebrating eight decades of service to the State.

Minister for Defence Helen McEntee TD paid tribute to current and former members, acknowledging their contribution to safeguarding Ireland's maritime interests and service to the State.

The family day coincides with the Minister's visit to Lebanon, where she is meeting Defence Forces personnel deployed with the UN Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL).

Over its history, the Naval Service has protected Ireland's maritime domain and supported fisheries protection, maritime security operations and search and rescue, while assisting other State agencies.

Minister Helen McEntee said: "This year provides an opportunity to recognise and celebrate 80 years of the Naval Service's contribution to the defence and security of the State, and to acknowledge the service of past and present personnel.

"For eight decades, Naval Service personnel have safeguarded Ireland's maritime interests, supported Defence Forces operations at home and overseas, and upheld the proud tradition of service that continues to define Óglaigh na hÉireann.

"As Minister for Defence, increasing investment in the people and capabilities of our Naval Service is a priority of mine. I want to thank all members of the Naval Service, past and present, for the work they have done and continue to do for our country."

"Today's family day is a fitting opportunity to bring together serving personnel, veterans and their families to celebrate the Naval Service's proud history and to recognise the people whose dedication and professionalism have underpinned its success over the last 80 years."

The Naval Service is the State's principal sea-going agency. While its primary daily tasking is fishery protection in line with Ireland's EU obligations, it also conducts maritime surveillance, drug interdiction, search and rescue, and wider maritime defence and security operations.
