Gardaí say two men wearing balaclavas entered the apartment and attacked the man.

He received a number of stab wounds and it is understood one of his hands was very badly injured.

A machete is thought to have been used in the attack.

The assault took place at around 2am in a house at the Rockshire Court area of Ferrybank, on the edge of Waterford city, after two masked men entered the property.
