Gangland Crime Targeted

As Justice Minister Dermot Ahern announced new measures today aimed at cracking down on gangland crime, it has emerged that four men have been detained after a gun was uncovered during a separate police operation in Co Cork.

The Minister's proposals follow talks between his office and the Gardái Commissioner.

This following the brutal murder of 35-year-old Roy Collins in Limerick last week.

Mr Ahern's plans will introduce a new offence of 'gang membership' as part of the new measures.

This will mean that people accused of the offence will automatically appear before the non-jury Special Criminal Court, unless the DPP directs otherwise.

Meanwhile, overnight, uniformed police officers stopped a car with four male occupants and recovered a gun along with two baseball bats and a number of balaclavas.

An official statement read: "At 8.30pm at Cloonlough, Mitchelstown, Co Cork, uniform Gardaí from Mitchelstown detained four men aged between 18 and 26."

The statement said that the weapons had been recovered and went on to say that the men "are currently detained under the provisions of Section 30 of the Offences Against the State Act, 1939, at Midleton and Fermoy Garda Stations".
