Five Held After Galway Explosive Seizure

Police in Galway are holding five people in connection with a "significant" seizure of explosives, made yesterday.

A reported 17.5kgs of commercial explosives were discovered by officers from the Galway West Division and National Support Units, as part of an ongoing operation against organised crime.

Three people were initially arrested by Gardaí in Oranmore, after police intercepted a car and found a quantity of explosives.

A subsequent search of a house near the village produced more explosives.

Police later detained two others in Headford.

The four men and one woman are currently being held at garda stations in Gort and Loughrea.

Held under Section 30 of the Offences Against the State Act 1939, the five are aged between 25 to 33.

Gardaí say they are treating the seizure as significant.

Viable Explosive Device Made Safe In Co Kildare
A viable explosive device has been made safe during a security operation in Co Kildare. Gardaí responded to a report of a suspect device in Leixlip on Monday night. Army bomb disposal experts examined the device and declared it 'viable'. The device was made safe just after midnight.
