Northern Driver Killed In Collision With Lorry

Police have now named the man killed in Monaghan after his van collided with a lorry yesterday morning.

Gardai said the male victim was 59-year-old Michael Manley from Greaghnacapple, Roslea, Co. Fermanagh.

Officers in Monaghan are investigating the accident, which occurred on the main Clones to Monaghan road at Stonebridge, Clones, Co. Monaghan at around 11.45am.

The accident occurred when a lorry collided with Mr Manley's van. He was pronounced dead at the scene and his body was removed to Caven General Hospital where a post mortem examination will be carried out.

The driver of the lorry and his passenger were taken to Cavan General Hospital suffering from shock. The road was closed and diversions were in place before being re-opened on Tuesday evening.

It was the fourth road death in the border area since the weekend and came just hours ahead of another Northern tragedy as a teenage died after being struck by a bus in Belfast city centre yesterday evening.

It is believed the girl was crushed beneath the wheels of the vehicle carrying rush-hour passengers.
