Irish Rider Withdrawn After Horse Tests Positive

An Irish equestrian medal hopeful has been taken out of the Olympic competition after his horse tested positive for a banned substance.

Denis Lynch is one of four riders who had qualified for Thursday's final round of the show jumping competition in Hong Kong who have been withdrawn from the event.

Lynch had qualified in joint eighth position for the final round with the hotly tipped Lantinus.

However, the Federation Equestre Internationale has provisionally suspended the riders and horses following doping and medication control tests, which indicated the presence of the banned substance Capsaicin in each horse.

The other suspended riders are Norway's Tory Andre Hansen, who had headed the list of qualifiers with Camiro, Germany's Christian Ahlmann with Coster, and Brazilian rider Bernado Alves whose equine partner is Chupa Chup.

Under FEI rules, Capsaicin, which is derived from chilli peppers, is classified as a prohibited substance for its pain relieving properties and propensity to induce hypersensitivity.
