ATM Robbery Suspect Detained As Minister Lobbied For Better Protection

Police have moved quickly to make an arrest following the robbery of a security van in Dublin today - ironically as a senior trade union official was calling on the Government to make more resources available to protect such staff.

A security man was confronted by a male assailant as he was filling an ATM at a shopping centre on Prussia Street, on Friday morning.

The single raider, who was unarmed, stole a cash box containing a large amount of cash, snatching it from a security worker, who was not injured in the incident.

The 29-year-old was arrested a short time later at a house off the North Circular Road where a cash box containing the cash was recovered.

Meanwhile, a union leader, SIPTU President Jack O'Connor has called for a further commitment of gardaí resources to combat the ongoing threat of attacks by armed gangs on cash-in-transit deliveries.

Mr O'Connor made the call when he met the Minister for Justice, Brian Lenihan, and the cash-in-transit industry social partners on the same day as the ATM robbery.

He said the union remains concerned at the increase in the frequency of 'tiger kidnappings' which put the safety of the security workers and their families at risk.

Mr O'Connor added that the Government must give greater consideration to the type of measures needed to deter criminals from holding family members hostage and coercing workers to co-operate with robberies.

The Irish Republic already gives significant coverage - even to the point of routinely providing gardaí-led Irish Army escorts to cash-in-transit vehicles crossing the border from Northern Ireland, on route to Dublin, despite the Northern Ireland authorities allocating no such escorts north of the border.
