A Council-backed summer programme is enlivening Limerick city centre with free events, refreshed public spaces and free weekend parking as it enters its third weekend in August.

Limerick City and County Council (LCCC) is encouraging residents and visitors to make the most of Summer in the City, which has been adding colour and activity across the city centre throughout August with no admission costs for the main attractions.

Funded by the 2026 Mayoral Fund and shaped in consultation with local businesses and stakeholders, the initiative aims to draw more people into the city centre, encourage longer stays and promote wider exploration of Limerick's neighbourhoods.

It remains business as usual for shops, cafés, restaurants and cultural venues, with the Summer in the City programme offering extra reasons to visit. Only limited traffic management is in place to support specific activations, with multiple routes open into the city. Road notices, maps and visitor information are available at Limerick.ie/summer.

Free parking is available for the remaining August weekends at the LCCC Car Park behind Merchant's Quay, accessed via Nicholas Street, after 4pm on Fridays and all day on Saturdays and Sundays.

Public spaces have been reimagined to create new places to relax and gather. The Crescent on O'Connell Avenue has been turned into Daniel's Garden Lounge — a nod to "The Liberator" Daniel O'Connell — offering a welcoming spot for picnics, outdoor meetings or simply people-watching amid Georgian architecture. Lower Glentworth Street has been similarly refreshed as The Glentworth Social, while Steamboat Quay's Urban Beach continues to draw families to a riverside setting. Back Lane has become The Hop Garden, a pedestrianised cultural and social space animated by Mother Mac's, and Nicholas Street in the Medieval Quarter comes alive each weekend with Treaty City Brewery's One Fomhar D'road Festival, featuring live music, street theatre and community-focused events.

A Superblock pilot continues every Sunday in August within Limerick's Georgian neighbourhood, spanning the area from Cecil Street to Barrington Street and from Pery Street, Davis Street and Baker Place to O'Connell Street. Using temporary planters and signage, the trial seeks to create a more welcoming, people-first environment. There are no road closures associated with the pilot, and access for residents, businesses and visitors is being maintained at all times.

Complementing the enhanced spaces is a programme of free performances and family activities across the city throughout the month. From this Saturday, the Xtreme Funfair sets up at Arthur's Quay Park, while Sunday's Dancing the Walls of Limerick one-day festival celebrates heritage and community in medieval surroundings. Music Generation Limerick City presents a Sound Safari at the Crescent, O'Connell Avenue, and the Analogue Photographers of Limerick offer a distinctive open-air photography experience.

Community-led initiatives will also help animate the city, adding to the vibrancy. The overall programme has been designed to balance accessibility, city-centre animation and business needs, requiring only limited traffic measures.
