NDFEM Co-ordinating Response Preparedness Ahead of Exceptionally Warm Weather

The National Directorate for Fire & Emergency Management (NDFEM) is actively co-ordinating with primary stakeholders to prepare for the elevated temperatures anticipated across Ireland over the upcoming days and nights.

Director of the NDFEM, Keith Leonard emphasised: "While the warm weather will be welcomed by many, it also brings risks that may not always be obvious or anticipated. The public should plan ahead, keep up to date with Met Éireann forecasts and warnings, and take appropriate precautions in relation to heat, water safety, thunderstorms and the possibility of localised flooding."

Forecast Conditions

According to Met Éireann, exceptionally warm weather is projected throughout the country this week, characterised by high daytime temperatures, humid nights, and the potential development of thunderstorms.

• Daytime Temperatures: Expected to surpass 25°C, with the potential to reach up to 30°C on Thursday.

• Night-time Conditions: Forecast to stay very mild and humid, with temperatures generally remaining above 15°C.

• Thunderstorms: Possible, particularly on Thursday. These storms can generate intense downpours over a brief duration, potentially causing sudden surface water flooding, reduced visibility, and hazardous driving conditions, even in locations not typically prone to flooding.

A yellow weather warning for high temperatures has been officially implemented from 12:00 on Tuesday 23/06/2026 until 09:00 on Friday 26/06/2026. Citizens are encouraged to regularly monitor the Met Éireann website (www.met.ie) and mobile application for the most up-to-date forecasts and weather alerts.

Public Health Guidance

Public health remains a paramount consideration during high-temperature episodes. Members of the public are recommended to adhere to the following safety measures:

• Remain in shaded areas.

• Avoid venturing outdoors or engaging in strenuous physical activities during the peak heat hours of the day.

• Consume plenty of fluids to stay hydrated.

• Apply UVA and UVB sunscreen to exposed skin, utilising factor 30+ for adults and factor 50+ for children.

Specific and comprehensive guidance regarding hot weather safety has been made available by the Health Services Executive (HSE) and can be accessed directly on their official platforms.
