FF Demand Public Consultation On Garda Reforms

Fianna Fáil have called for a detailed public consultation to be carried out ahead of reforms of the Garda operational model.

Jim O'Callaghan's comments come after Garda Commissioner Drew Harris announced a future vision for the Garda, with more officers working on the front-line.

Deputy O'Callaghan welcomed the plans for enhanced community policing and greater resources for An Garda Síochána, but said relevant groups must be given an opportunity to scrutinise the plans.

The Fianna Fáil Justice spokesperson said: "It is also vital that there is detailed consultation with community groups, victims representative groups and Garda representatives in the coming months so that the purpose of these operational changes are explained. The planned changes are sweeping in scope and will require broad support if they are to succeed.

"This plan must not become a cost cutting exercise. Any additional savings generated by this reorganisation plan should be reinvested in policing."

Traffic Calming Scheme Introduced In Ennis

The County Clare town of Ennis is set to boost its environmentally friendly transport access for cyclists and pedestrians.

The 1.2km traffic calming and cycle lanes scheme links the Kilrush Road to St Flannan's College Roundabout, as well as connecting to the Ennis Active Travel Town Scheme network of cycle lanes. A new zebra crossing is also included near Éire Óg GAA, as well as new uncontrolled crossing points, an extended bus parking area at St Flannan's College and a two-way cycle lane from the new zebra crossing to the Kilrush Road.

Work is nearing completion and all signage will be in place early next week.

The scheme is funded by the Department of Transport, Tourism & Sport (DTTAS) and has been approved by the Members of Clare County Council's Ennis Municipal District in response to concerns about speeding on a residential road with a 1300-pupil school.
