More Than 1,700 Weapons Stolen Garda Figures Show

More than 1,700 weapons were stolen during 2010 to 2014, a report by RTÉ has revealed.

Garda figures reportedly seen by RTÉ News, revealed that 853 shotguns were stolen, along with 17 handguns and around forty air pistols.

The weapons are believed to have been stolen from both private collections and firearms dealers.

It is understood that at present gardaí are unable to accurately identify the number of times a stolen weapon may have subsequently been used in a crime, but are working on compiling the information for the Oireachtas Justice Committee.

14 Suspected Stolen Vehicles Seized In Co Longford
14 suspected stolen vehicles have been seized in a garda operation in Co Longford. In an intelligence led operation, garda seized 12 Ford transit vans, a camper van and a caravan. Garda from Granard and Longford were joined by officers from the Department of Social Welfare and officers from Revenue Custom and Excise.

Three Men Arrested Over Seizure Of Suspected Stolen Goods
Gardaí have arrested three men and seized suspected stolen property in an operation at Rosslare Europort. The arrests were made on Thursday, 25 February, in a joint operation between garda and Revenue Officers. In the operation a white Mercedes lorry was stopped as it was about to board a ferry departing Rosslare for Cherbourg.

Garda Using 'Bait' Bikes To Catch Thieves
Bike thefts in Ireland have increased by 227% in the last ten years, figures from An Garda Síochána have revealed. With more than 2,100 bikes stolen last year, according to a report by RTÉ, garda have launched a campaign to target the problem. Bikes are being left as bait, which are trackable if stolen.
