Ombudsman Investigate Death Of Man After Leaving Custody

An investigation has been launched into the death of 23-year-old man a short time after leaving garda custody.

The Garda Ombudsman, who are investigating the death, say that on Wednesday 21 May, 2014, a man was arrested by gardaí in Maynooth and taken to Leixlip Garda Station. It is understood that the man was intoxicated when arrested.

Upon arrival at the station, an ambulance was called and the man was then take to James Connolly Memorial Hospital. He was pronounced dead a short time later on Wednesday afternoon.

The incident was referred to the Garda Ombudsman in accordance with Section 102 of the Garda Síochána Act. GSOC’s investigation is at an early stage.

The identity of the deceased cannot be released until all family members have been informed.

Garda Ombudsman Appeal For Witnesses After Man's Death
The Garda Ombudsman is appealing for witnesses after a man died after being arrested in Co Mayo. Paraic O'Donnell, 39, from Achill Sound in Co Mayo, was arrested at Cox's when Gardaí were called to an incident at the late bar around 1am. Mr O’Donnell was taken away by gardaí in a car, and subsequently died.

Garda Arrested In Connection With Sexual Assault
A garda has been arrested by Garda Ombudsman Commission investigators and is being questioned about a sexual attack. The garda has been suspended by the Garda Commissioner and is being detained at Loughrea Garda Station. He is the first member of the force to be arrested by the Garda Ombudsman.

Mayo Gang Assaults Injuries Probed
Four men have been hurt during two separate assaults by gangs of men in a Co Mayo town over the weekend. The first incident occurred at approximately 3.30am, when two men aged 27 and 32-years-old were assaulted while walking down New Street, Ballinrobe by a number of men.
