High Court Grant Order To Withdraw Life Support

The High Court has granted an order allowing a Dublin maternity hospital to withdraw life support from a severely brain damaged baby.

A special sitting of the court was held after the mother died on Tuesday shortly after delivering the baby.

It is understood that the mother was 39 weeks pregnant and was suffering cardiac arrest when an ambulance brought her into the hospital.

The baby had no respiratory activity, needed artificial ventilation and heart support, and was described as severely brain damaged.

The hospital said that the baby had just 10% chance of suffering longer than 28 days.

It is understood that the baby's father and grandmother had both consented to the withdrawal of life support.
