DCC Forced To Shelve Incinerator Consultancy Plan

Plans to recruit a group of consultants in relation to the Poolbeg incinerator have been "shelved", Dublin City Council (DCC) has said.

Outgoing consultancy firm RPS was due to be replaced by Danish firm COWI, who would subsequently have been responsible for negotiating on behalf of the local authority with US incinerator firm Covanta.

However, DCC have now put this plan on hold, casting doubt on the future of the proposed Poolbeg incinerator, after the European Commission upheld a complaint brought by Sandymount residents that the consultancy contract did not conform to EU procurement guidelines.

It is understood that COWI had been paid some €32 million to act as representatives. This is on top of the €96m that has already been spent on the incinerator scheme over the last 12 years.
