DCC Urged To Terminate Poolbeg Incinerator Project
Dublin City Council's Chief Executive, Owen Keegan, has been urged to end the contract for the construction of the Poolbeg Incinerator.
The Chief Executive had previously said that a decision on the incinerator would be made following an EU ruling on two complaints made about the project.
However, Councillor O'Callaghan points out that the EU ruling was made three months ago yet no decision has be given on the Poolbeg Incinerator.
"The European Commission ruled three months ago on 7 May that the Poolbeg Incinerator project did not breach State Aid rules. The Chief Executive told Councillors that a decision on the future of the Incinerator would be made following the ruling.
"Three months have now passed and no decision has been made. The Chief Executive needs to scrap this wasteful project promptly. The longer this indecision proceeds the greater will be the financial drain on the city.
"To date over €100 million has been spent on this project which was planned for a different era. A project of this size will deter recycling and have a detrimental impact on one of Dublin's most scenic areas. The Chief Executive needs to heed the views of the elected representatives of Dublin City who have consistently opposed this project."

€350m Poolbeg Incinerator Halted
Construction has halted on Dublin's Poolbeg incinerator after the Department of the Environment failed to approve a foreshore licence. The Department is yet to process an application lodged in December 2008 for an out-flow pipe into the sea. Work on the €350m facility can't resume until the license is granted.
