New Cheaper Drug Prices Introduced
The government plan to replace branded drugs prescribed to patients with cheaper generic alternatives comes into force today.
Commonly prescribed drugs will be now be cheaper for both patients who buy them at pharmacies and the Health Service Executive, who buy them on behalf of people with medical cards.
The plan was introduced in an effort to reduce the State drug bill from almost €2 billion a year.
New referencer prices will see the HSE save some 70% on drugs, campared to prices in May 2013, Minister for Health James Reilly has said.

The Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport, Shane Ross has announced the commencement of the drug driving provisions in the Road Traffic Act 2016. One of the key measures in the legislation provides for Preliminary Drug Testing, which will enable Gardaí to test motorists whom they suspect of driving under the influence of drugs at the roadside.

Gardaí Arrest 45 In Major Drugs Operation
A total of 45 people have been arrested in the past 48 hours in Gardaí a crackdown on the sale and supply of heroin and “crack” cocaine in the Dublin region. The operation, which involved Garda drug units from Kevin Street, Pearse Street and Store Street stations, resulted in 150 charges being brought, according to Gardaí this morning.

New legislation will see pharmacists made to offer patients the cheapest available version of a drug, in an effort to save millions from the States medical bill. Patients will be offered a cheaper generic version of a drug evenif a doctor has prescribed a brand name product, according to Irish Medicines Board Chief Executive Dr Pat O'Mahony.
