Patients And Taxpayers Being Ripped Off By Drug Prices
Commenting on the Sunday Business Post survey showing the high price of generic drugs in this State, Sinn Féin Health spokepserson Caoimhghín Ó Caoláin TD said it showed that patients and taxpayers are being ripped off.
He said: "The survey shows that the HSE and patients here are paying up to 12 times more than the NHS for the same generic drugs. Patients and taxpayers are quite simply being ripped off by the pharmaceutical industry and this is facilittated by the Government's agreement with that industry. For the industry to claim that the massive price differential is accounted for by specific packaging required for this State is an insult to people's intelligence.
"I have repeatedly raised with Health Minister James Reilly the need for action to require greater use of generic drugs and to address drug prices overall. This survey shows the situation is even worse than suspected yet the Government has taken little action, apart from the publication of a Bill which has yet to be enacted. It is long past time for the profiteering of the pharmaceutical industry to be confronted once and for all."

The Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport, Shane Ross has announced the commencement of the drug driving provisions in the Road Traffic Act 2016. One of the key measures in the legislation provides for Preliminary Drug Testing, which will enable Gardaí to test motorists whom they suspect of driving under the influence of drugs at the roadside.

Gardaí Arrest 45 In Major Drugs Operation
A total of 45 people have been arrested in the past 48 hours in Gardaí a crackdown on the sale and supply of heroin and “crack” cocaine in the Dublin region. The operation, which involved Garda drug units from Kevin Street, Pearse Street and Store Street stations, resulted in 150 charges being brought, according to Gardaí this morning.

Communities Minister Must Prioritise Anti-Poverty Measures
The Alliance Party has criticised Communities Minister, Gordon Lyons, for "not prioritising anti-poverty measures". MLA Kellie Armstrong said the Minister's inaction was "disappointing" in light of a new report showing that one in five children in NI are living in relative poverty.

New Cheaper Drug Prices Introduced
The government plan to replace branded drugs prescribed to patients with cheaper generic alternatives comes into force today. Commonly prescribed drugs will be now be cheaper for both patients who buy them at pharmacies and the Health Service Executive, who buy them on behalf of people with medical cards.
