Over 2,000 Cars Taken Off The Roads For Being 'Dangerous'
More than 2,000 vehicles have failed the National Car Test (NCT) so far this year and have been taken off the road for not meeting basic safety standards.
Figures from the National Car Testing Service (NCTS) show 2,349 vehicles failed because they were classed as “dangerous”.
Almost 300,000 vehicles, more than half of those tested between January and July, failed the first test and had to return for a retest. Nine out of every ten cars passed the retest.
Vehicles are considered dangerous by the NCTS if they have a defect that constitutes a “direct and immediate risk to road safety”.
Fines of up to €5,000 can be imposed for driving a car that has been labelled as being dangerous, as well as five penalty points or three months imprisonment.

Decrease of 14.6% In New Private Cars Licensed
There were 10,581 new private cars licensed in March 2012, compared with 12,390 in March 2011, a decrease of 14.6%. The number of new goods vehicles licensed in March 2012 was 1,155 compared with 1,179 in the corresponding month last year - a decrease of 2.0%.

Gardaí have arrested 17 people in a series of raids in the Tallaght and Rathfarnham areas. Garda staged a "day of action" on Thursday 27 June in an operation targeting people wanted by the courts for various drugs, burglary, theft, road traffic offences and public order matters offences.

Three Men Hit By Car Fleeing From Garda
Three men are being treated in hospital after being hit by a car which was being pursued by gardaí. Gardaí have said a Hyundai Accent struck three men, aged in their 70s, and crashed into two parked cars outside the pitch and putt course in Parteen, Co Clare, at about 17:00 on Thursday.
