Irish Legislation On Car Clocking Should Be Adopted In EU

Irish legislation on car clocking should be adopted across Europe Fine Gael TD for Kildare North, Anthony Lawlor.

Deputy Lawlor said that the move would further protect Ireland from clocked cars coming in from other countries.

"In 2013 I introduced legislation to make it illegal for people to clock cars in this jurisdiction and this was incorporated by then Minister for Transport, Leo Varadkar, into the 2014 Road Traffic Act. An article in today’s Irish Independent shows that this legislation has been successful in reducing the number of clocked cars here in Ireland," Deputy Lawlor said.

"However it is also worrying to note that vehicles imported here from the UK are twice as likely as a second hand Irish car to have been clocked. According to cartell.ie, one in seven UK vehicles show mileage discrepancies.

"In order to protect the Irish market from these clocked cars coming in from other countries, I am going to push for my legislation to be replicated at EU level and to be binding across all member states.

"I plan to work with my Fine Gael colleagues in the European Parliament to progress this matter and hope that it will result in increased transparency for car imports across the EU."
