Bank Clerk Shot Three Times May Have Been Victim Of Mistaken Identity

A bank clerk may have been shot dead due to a case of mistaken identity.

32-year-old Keith Deegan was shot three times when he answered a call at his front door at around 22:40 on Tuesday.

Gardai admitted last night that they had not yet established a clear motive for the gun attack but it was possible Mr Deegan was mistaken for a man who had fallen foul of a drug trafficking gang.

Officers said the gunman appeared to be frantic as he knocked on the door and had begun shooting with an automatic pistol before the door was fully open.

Two bullets hit the front door the door and Mr Deegan was struck three times in the thigh and foot. He collapsed to the ground as the attacker made off on foot.

It is believed an accomplice nearby in a Volvo car, with a registration 05 D plate, collected the gunman. The car, later found burnt out at Carrigmore Green estate in City West, had been stolen in the Sandymount area of south Dublin two days previously.

A gardai officer said: "The gunman's behaviour appeared to have been erratic and he couldn't wait for the door to be fully open before he began shooting."

"But you can't be sure what his intention was. He could have been under the influence of drugs at the time," he added.

Mr Deegan has no criminal convictions and has never come to the attention of the gardai in the past, telling detectives interviewing him at his hospital bedside, that he didn’t even have any road traffic penalty points.

The official had been on sick leave from his bank for the past seven months.

Gardai at Tallaght last night appealed to anybody, who spotted a man acting suspiciously in the Corbally Green or Carrigmore Green areas of City West between 10pm and 11pm on Tuesday to contact them, or to phone the confidential line, 1800 666111.
