Leitrim Man Killed In Sydney Car Crash

A man has died after crashing his vehicle in Australia on Saturday night.

James Gallagher, 22, who was working as a construction worker in Sydney, crashed his utility vehicle into a safety barrier and then a tree after leaving the road.

The vehicle also contained the man's brother who escaped with a broken arm.

The family of the two men is preparing to travel to Australia to bring his remains home as shocked relatives and friends try to come to terms with news of both deaths yesterday.

The brothers hail from Kinlough in north Leitrim, but James had been working as a machine driver in Sydney for the past two years.

The incident comes only a day after Gardai revealed they are investigating a fatal road traffic collision in County Leitrim, which occurred on Sunday night at about 10.00pm.

A 25-year-old woman was killed when the car she was driving crashed. Therese Shanley was on her own in the car at the time and there was no other vehicle involved in the collision. The woman's body was removed fro the scene to Sligo General Hospital where a post mortem examination was carried out.

The road at the scene remains closed pending an examination of the area by Garda Forensic Collision Investigators.

Meanwhile, in traffic news this morning, Gardaí are calling for careful driving as major traffic disruption is underway due to a security alert is underway outside Newry.

The A1 Newry by-pass has been closed in both directions after a suspicious object was spotted in the area.

Diversions are in place with south-bound traffic now going through the centre of Newry.
