Charge Over Fatal Flag Fracas

A man has been charged in the North with the attempted murder of Damien Fleming, who was seriously injured during sectarian violence in Coleraine, Co Londonderry last year.

Catholic Kevin McDaid was killed when trouble flared on the Somerset Drive estate over the erecting of Nationalist flags.

The 49-year-old father-of-four was beaten to death by a Loyalist gang close to his home in the wake of a contentious football match.

So far 11 people have been charged in connection with the murder of Mr McDaid.

His friend, Mr Fleming was left critically injured in the attack. He has since recovered.

Police in the North West last night charged a 41-year-old man with the attempted murder of Mr Fleming.

The accused is expected to appear before a Magistrate's court today.

Shot Man's Wounds 'Not Life Threatening'
A 35-year-old man has been shot twice in the leg inside a house in Twinbrook in Co Antrim on the outskirts of Belfast. A young girl and a woman were in the house in the Summerhill Drive area when the attack happened on Wednesday night. However, it is not believed that the man's injuries are life threatening.

Call For Nursing Vacancies To Be Filled
The HSE should immediately fill the 75 nursing vacancies in the hospitals in Portlaoise, Mullingar and Tullamore, according to Fianna Fail. Deputy Fleming said the HSE is losing money hand over fist by paying for all this work to be carried out on an agency basis.

Fresh McDaid Arrest Made
Police have arrested a 20-year-old man in connection with the murder of Coleraine father-of-four Kevin McDaid. Detectives detained the man in the town last night. This brings the total number of arrests over the killing to 25. Mr McDaid was beaten to death by a loyalist mob in May.

Man Remanded Over Coleraine Killing
A susepct has today been remanded in custody charged with the murder of Catholic man Kevin McDaid in Co Londonderry. James McAfee, 28, of Lisnablagh Road, also faces four other charges, including the attempted murder of Damian Fleming and assaulting Mr McDaid's wife.
