Man, 36, Killed In Mullingar Collision

A 36-year-old man has been killed in a road collision in Mullingar during the early hours of this morning.

The male was fatally injured and pronounced dead at the scene when the car he was travelling in left the road and collided with a pole. Two other male occupants were taken to the Midlands Regional Hospital at Mullingar, one described as in a serious condition.

Gardai at Mullingar are investigating the collision, which occurred on the Mullingar to Ballynacarrigy Road at Muleadys Cross at approximately 1.30am.

The road is currently closed and diversions are in place pending an examination by Gardai Forensic Collision Investigators.

A Gardaí spokesman said they wished to appeal for witnesses to the collision to contact Mullingar Garda Station on 044 9384000, the Garda Confidential Telephone Line 1800 666 111 or any Garda Station.

The news of this latest road traffic collision comes in the shadow of two incidents that claimed the lives of pedestrians.

In the latest incident, a male pedestrian aged in his 50s was fatally injured when struck by a passing motor car on Sunday.

The collision is believed to be connected to an earlier minor collision, which occurred some minutes earlier at the same location.

Gardai at Rathkeale are investigating the fatal collision which occurred on the N21 at Coolanoran, Ardagh, Co Limerick at approximately 7.30pm on Sunday night.

In an earlier incident on Friday, a pedestrian was struck by a motor car on the north bound carriageway of the M1 in the towns land of Commons near Castlebellingham, Co Louth. The pedestrian, a man aged 37 years, died at the scene.

Officers have named the as Adrian Durr from Banbridge, County Down. His family have been informed.

Gardai at Ardee have also launched an investigation into the incident, which occurred on Friday at approximately 8.50pm.

An 18-year-old male was fatally injured when the car he was travelling in, as a front seat passenger, collided with a tractor at approximately 11.50pm in Cloonart, Bornacoola. The man was pronounced dead at Mullingar Hospital.

Two Dead In Separate Collisions
Two people have died on Ireland's roads after traffic collisions in Dublin and Kilkenny in the last two days. In the latest incident, a male aged 19 was fatally injured when the motorcycle he was driving collided with a stationary vehicle. His body was taken to Tallaght Hospital.

Four Men Dead In Separate Collisions
A total of four men have died in a spate of separate car collisions over the weekend. In the most recent incident, a motorcyclist collided with a pick-up truck towing a trailer, resulting in the death of the motorcyclist, a man in his late 20s. The collision which occurred at Cloghnadromin, Ballysimon, CoLimerick at approx 1.30pm on Sunday.

Elderly Woman Killed In Traffic Collision
An elderly woman has been fatally injured in a traffic collision in Westmeath. Gardai investigating the collision, which occurred near Clonfad in County Westmeath at 11.15am, are appealing for witnesses to come forward. The collision between two cars resulted in the death at the scene of the 76-year-old woman.
