Twenty Eight Arrested In Drug Crack Down

Some 28 people have been arrested in a drug crackdown in the Dublin area as part of an "ongoing and extensive" Garda operation.

The arrests took place as part of an operation that began on Sunday, coordinated by the Garda National Drugs Unit with local Garda Drugs Units in the Blanchardstown, Finglas and Athlone districts of Dublin.

Gardai in Athlone yesterday arrested six people including five men and one woman, all in their 20s or early 30’s. Four have been charged under the Misuse of Drugs Act and released on bail to appear at Athlone District Court today.

One was brought before Athlone District Court yesterday and released on bail to appear before that court on the 24th of February. The sixth, a female, appeared before Longford District Court today.

Meanwhile, Gardai in Blanchardstown also today arrested eight men in their 20s. They are detained under he Criminal Justice Act at Finglas and Cabra Garda station. A gairdai spokesman said charges under the Misuse of Drugs Act were also being considered.

"This brings to twenty-eight the total number arrested in the Blanchardstown and Finglas area in the last three days as part of this operation," the spokesman added.

Speaking today, Superintendent Aidan Glacken of Athlone Garda Station said: "This is a major blow for drug dealers operating in the Athlone area. Gardai from Athlone District will continue to target street level drug dealers and those who supply them."

The operation has been ongoing for a number of months involving surveillance, intelligence gathering and concluded in the last number of days with the large number of arrests.

Gardaí Arrest 45 In Major Drugs Operation
A total of 45 people have been arrested in the past 48 hours in Gardaí a crackdown on the sale and supply of heroin and “crack” cocaine in the Dublin region. The operation, which involved Garda drug units from Kevin Street, Pearse Street and Store Street stations, resulted in 150 charges being brought, according to Gardaí this morning.
