Body Recovered After Car Plunge

The body of the driver of a car that fell from 40ft off a cliff on Achill Island in Co Mayo has been recovered from the coast.

The vehicle left a cliff road that ran alongside Keem Bay at around 2.30am this morning.

Coastguard and Gardaí launched an extensive rescue operation at around 3.30am this morning with the Achill coastguard employing lifeboat and the Coastguard helicopter based at Sligo.

However, efforts to raise the car have so far not been successful.

The driver of the car is believed to have been a local man in his 20s.

Emergency services recovered the man's body off the County Mayo coast this morning.

The crews located the vehicle and the casualty shortly before 8.30am.

A Garda spokesman said the incident was being treated as a tragedy.

The road is well known as a precarious drive that was constructed in the 1960s along the route of an older track.
