Woman Stabbed In Dublin

A woman is in hospital in Dublin after she was attacked while bringing her young son to school this morning.

The woman, who is in her 30s, was slashed in the face with a knife on Drumcondra Road at about 8.50am this morning.

Gardaí say they are following a definite line of inquiry in the case and have carried out a number of searches for the suspect.

They are treating the attack as a domestic incident.

The woman is being treated in the Mater Misericordiae University Hospital but her injuries are not life threatening.

The attack comes only days after a woman in Co Down also received facial wounds during a stabbing attack.

The 22-year-old woman suffered a serious facial injury when she was attacked with a glass at a nightclub in Bangor.

The incident happened at a premises in the seaside town's High Street on Sunday morning but police only released details of the incident on Tuesday.

A 22-year-old woman was arrested in relation to the incident and was subsequently released on bail.

Figures released this week show that more than 1,000 knife-related crimes have been committed in Ireland so far this year.

Gardai say a total of 1,030 blade offences have been perpetrated already in 2009, meaning more than 30 knife-related crimes are being committed every week, leading to 12 deaths and hundreds of serious injuries.

The Garda data also shows knife possession offences have risen from 75 in 2004 to 308 incidents in 2008, a 300% increase.
