Boy And Girl Drown In Irish Rivers

A teenage girl and young boy have died in separate drowning accidents.

In Co Down, ten-year-old Daniel Andre died in hospital after pulled from the River Bann.

It is understood that he was in the river with friends at Hilltown, near Rathfriland, when he got into difficulties shortly before 5pm yesterday.

It is thought he may have been under the water for several minutes before rescuers found him.

Emergency staff had worked to resuscitate him at the scene before he was taken to hospital in Newry and was then transferred to Belfast, but died this morning.

In a second tragic drowning, a 16-year-old girl died after getting trapped in the River Liffey in the Strawberry Beds area of Chapelizod, Dublin.

The teenage girl from Clonsilla was walking along the side of Wrens Nest Weir when she lost her footing and fell into the river. She became trapped under a large piece of wood.

Onlookers, firemen and gardaí tried to help her. She was taken to James Connolly Memorial Hospital in Blanchardstown but staff were unable to save her, and she was pronounced dead.

Gardaí have appealed for information on a fatal road traffic accident near Mullingar, Co Westmeath on Saturday morning. A 14-year-old boy has died after getting into difficulty in the River Shannon, Co Westmeath. It is understood the boy was swimming in the river on Wednesday near to the Athlone Sub Aqua clubhouse when he got into difficulty.

7-Year-Old Dies After River Fall
A 7-year-old boy has died after falling into a river near his home in Midleton, Co Cork on Sunday. It is understood that the boy was playing with friends near his home in Tir Cluain when he fell into the Owenacurra River around19:00. Two neighbours pulled the child from the water about 250 metres from where he went in.

Woman, 82, Dies In Road Accident
An 82-year-old woman has died following a road accident in Donegal. The crash occurred at around 3.50pm on Monday (18 August) at The Ross in Bundoran. Gardaí have said a car collided with a fence in the incident. The woman was transferred to Sligo Hospital but later died from her injuries. Anyone with information is asked to contact Gardaí.
