Health Insurer Reports Mammoth Deficit

Ireland's state owned health insurer VHI has reported a deficit of €65m for the ten month period ending December 2008.

The level of deficit is a complete reversal of the €63m of surplus the company was running at in the previous year.

The company claimed it lost €43m on its investment portfolio over the year, while paying millions extra due to an increase in the number of medical procedures it paid for.

In the report published by the company yesterday, VHI claimed the company it spent on average €775 for each customer last year in meeting their medical needs - between €300 and €400 more on each subscriber compared to its rivals.

Jimmy Tolan, Chief Executive, said: "The cost of providing high quality medical care continues to increase year on year - a factor of ongoing improvements in technologies, treatment and drugs."

The number of medical procedures, which VHI customers accessed in private hospitals, increased 14% in 2008 compared to 2007, he added.
