Major Medical Card Scheme Review To Happen Next Year
A major review of the medical card system is to be carried out next year, the biggest review in the history of the scheme.
According to reports over 1 million medical card holders will have their cases reviewed to establish if they are still eligible for the benefit.
It is understood that Health Service Executive (HSE) chief Tony O'Brien revealed the inspection plan to members of the Dail Committee on Public Accounts.
The HSE chief reassured that no one still eligible for a medical card will lose it, adding that the test for a discretionary card will continue to be based on "undue hardship" and not just the medical condition itself.

No Medical Coverage For Quarter Of Irish Adults
More than 25% of Irish adults do not have a medical card, or private health insurance, the latest figures from the Central Statistics Office have revealed. According to the CSO, only 44% of those who responded to the latest Quarterly National Household Survey, said that they had private insurance, while 24% said they had a medical card.
