Double Rapist Given 20 Years

A 21-year-old man has been jailed for 20 years for the rape of two women.

David McCartan, of Casement Road in Finglas, broke into the women's houses in 2007 and 2008 before raping and assaulting the women and burgling their houses.

McCartan pleaded guilty to two charges of rape and two of burglary in May 2007 and August 2008.

The court heard McCartan raped his second victim while on bail for the first attack.

In the case of the first victim, a mother of two, McCartan broke into her home and she woke to find him in her room. He raped her and threatened to kill her children if she reported him.

Over a year later, while on bail for that offence, McCartan broke into the second victim's flat. He beat up her boyfriend before raping her.

He was later arrested and made full admissions.

Sentencing on Friday, Mr Justice Paul Carney said that in the first case, he had actually disclosed that he had planned the violation of that woman for some time and was awaiting opportunity to do so.

He handed down two 10-year sentences to be served consecutively.
