'The Cope' To Run In Euro Elections

Fianna Fáil ex-Minister of State Pat 'The Cope' Gallagher has announced he will run in the European Parliamentary elections.

The long serving TD was the Minister for Donegal South West and has worked as an MEP in the 90s before running for Government office in the 20002 general election.

Announcing his decision to run this morning, Mr Gallagher said: "We need to work in Europe on these different economic support programmes so that we can maintain jobs, create new jobs, remain competitive and secure new investment for our country.

"If I am elected to the European Parliament on June 5th next, I will ensure at all times that the interests of Irish fishermen and their communities will be protected in Europe.

"I welcome the fact that the European Commission has initiated recently a review into the future operation of the European Common Fisheries Policy," he said.

Nominations for the European Parliament elections closed at midday today. The deadline for candidates in the local elections to put themselves on the ballot paper is not until midday on Saturday.

More than 500 million people are entitled to vote in the European Parliament elections, scheduled to take place on 5 June.
