Dunne Could Run In European Elections

Irish entrepreneur Ben Dunne has said he could run as an independent candidate in next years European Parliament elections.

Mr Dunne claims he will put himself forward for the elections if there is a second referendum on the Lisbon Treaty before then.

The former director of his family business Dunnes Stores made the announcement on the Liveline programme on RTÉ Radio. He later told RTÉ he would most likely stand in the three-seat Dublin constituency.

Mr Dunne said that the majority of people in Ireland wanted the European Union to become more democratic, and until that happens the Lisbon Treaty should be abolished.

He added that the Government should listen to the wishes of the majority of people in Ireland, and make this stance clear to French President Nicolas Sarkozy when he visits Dublin next Monday.
