Teen Girl In Court Over Assault On Tourist

A teenage girl has admitted in a Co Wicklow court to assaulting and robbing a tourist.

Bray District Court heard that Michelle Teelan, 19, took the handbag from the woman because she was looking for money to buy alcohol.

The robbery took place on July 9 on Main Street in Bray. The court heard that Teelan came up behind a Spanish woman, who was making a call, and tried to grab her handbag.

A struggle ensued, and the injured party was punched a number of times. A gardaí witness said Teelan was later identified from CCTV footage, and admitted to the robbery.

Teelan, of Dargle Heights, Fassaroe, in Bray - but now living under the care of the probation services on North Circular Road - also faced charges of arson. She has three previous convictions and admitted before Bray District Court to the robbery and arson charges.

Defence solicitor Conway O'Hara said Teelan's background was "chaotic and abusive".

She is currently under the supervision of the probation services and is in a residential treatment programme.
