Live Register Jumps By 20,000
Despite hints from the the Finance Minister yesterday that this months Live Register would hold good news, another 20,000 people have signed on, according to the Central Statistics Office.
Today's Live Register figures for March bring the seasonally adjusted total claiming benefits to 372,800.
It is the highest Live Register total ever, with the unemployment rate rising to 11% last month from 10.4% in February.
Fine Gael's Leo Varadkar said the figures were likely to reach half a million by the end of the year and called on Brian Cowen to implement his Party's jobs plan, 'Rebuilding Ireland' and adopt Fine Gael's proposals to support business and retraining.
Mr Varadkar said: "More than one in ten people are now on the dole. More than one in ten people are now on the dole.
"Ireland now has one of the highest unemployment rates in the eurozone, higher than Germany, France, Italy, and the Netherlands. Only Belgium and Spain have higher unemployment rates."
The CSO says that in the year to March, there was an unadjusted increase of 173,279 on the Live Register up 87.5%, which is the highest on record.
More men than women joined the live register last month, with 13,600 males and 6,000 females.
The Taoiseach said a fall is unlikely in the coming months, while Fine Gael's Enda Kenny said the rise in unemployment was an appalling situation and said it seemed the Government was throwing in the towel in regards to saving jobs.
