Teachers Protest Bailed Out Bank

Teachers are staging a protest today at one of the banks that is about to be bailed out by government funds.

A picket will be held outside the Dublin office of Anglo Irish Bank the Stephen's Green office at 4.30pm by a group called Teachers United and includes members from the three main teaching unions the ASTI, INTO and the TUI.

The protest is to highlight under-funding in the education sector.

A statement by the group said the picket was "to highlight the fact that the education system is grossly underfunded while the banks that were making €1 million a day in profit during the Celtic Tiger are being bailed out".

On Friday, the TUI issued a statement to its members suggesting a work to rule policy after the introduction of a controversial pension levy by the government.

A spokesman for the union said: "The Teachers' Union of Ireland (TUI) today recommended that members reconsider all duties additional to teaching and lecturing, cut out extraneous tasks and solely focus their efforts on their core duties."

The Anglo Irish Bank was nationalised on the 19th of January and removed form the stock exchange following a hidden loans scandal involving the bank's ex-Chairman Sean Fitzpatrick and Chief Executive Officer David Drumm, resulting in a mass resignation of the bank's board.
