Second-Level Teachers Balloted Over Haddington Road

Some 30,000 second-level school teachers are to be balloted over the proposed Haddington Road agreement, previously accepted by primary teachers union INTO and others.

The teachers, represented by Asti and TUI, will be asked if they accept or reject the proposals, put together in May, and to give a mandate for industrial action in the event of a rejection.

Asti have recommended their members reject the agreement, while TUI have not given a recommendation, with the exception of urging members to vote for industrial action should the agreement be rejected.

Should the teachers reject it, they will continue to be subject to the terms of FEMPI (Financial Emergency in the Public Interest) legislation which includes provisions for a complete freeze on incremental payments, rather than the partial suspensions agreed under the Haddington Road deal.

TUI members have until September 20 to vote, while Asti members have one day less, with a deadline of September 19.
