Three Arrested After Post Office Robbery

Three men have been arrested in following an armed raid on a post office in Arklow, Co Wickow.

An armed gang, one of whom was carrying a gun and another a sledgehammer, escaped with between €20,000 and €30,000 in cash following the armed assault at around 9.30am this morning.

No shots were fired during the robbery and nobody was injured.

The gang made their escape in a blue van, which was later found abandoned at the docks in Arklow.

However, a garda operation was set up involving armed units and air support and an armed checkpoint stopped a van at Ashford.

Three men in their 20s and 40s were arrested and are now being detained under Section 30 of the Offences Against the state Act at Wicklow and Arklow garda stations.

The two vans have been taken away for forensic examination.
