Geoghegan Murder Prompts Proposal For Handgun Ban

The Justice Minister has announced plans for a complete ban on the possession of handguns in Ireland, following the drug-gang murder of Shane Geoghegan.

Speaking in response to opposition criticism of the Government's tackling of organised crime in the Dáil last night, Dermot Ahern promised new legislation and a crackdown on hand-guns.

The matter had prompted a private members debate, with Fine Gael calling for new measures to crack down on crime gangs.

Fine Gael's justice spokesperson Charlie Flanagan said that by failing to prosecute organised crime-linked murders, the Government was failing victims, their families and society.

In a statement given to the Daíl, Mr Ahern said: "The small number of policing priorities which I am setting will clearly reflect the paramount importance and absolute priority of - and I quote – 'targeting serious crime, in particular organised, gun and drug related crime'."

Gang members in Limerick killed Mr Geoghegan in cold blood last week in a case of apparent mistaken identity. His killers are yet to be apprehended.
