Tragic Boy's Bike Brakes Faulty

The death of a 10-year-old cyclist who died after being involved in an accident with a Dublin Bus last year has been back in focus this week.

The Inquest into the death of Padraig McGillivray, from O'Devaney Gardens, heard evidence from a public service vehicle inspector based at Dublin Castle who said that the victim was riding a bike with defective brakes.

The accident happened on Faussagh Avenue on the afternoon of May 1, 2007 and left Padraig fatally hurt.

He later died from the injuries he sustained in the accident just a few hours later at Temple Street Children's Hospital.

The bus and the bike involved in the accident were each examined and while the bus was found to be in good mechanical condition, there was evidence that the brakes on the bike were defective prior to the impact.

The rear brake was totally disconnected, and the front brake was poorly adjusted.
