Man Injured Following Weekend Gun Attacks

A man is recovering in hospital after a drive-by style shooting in Limerick on Sunday night.

The 20-year-old man, who is believed to be from the Garryowen area, was found injured on South Claghaun Road shortly after 11.00pm.

He is believed to have suffered leg injuries after a gunman fired a number of shots at him from a passing BMW before driving away.

The man is being treated in the Midwestern Regional Hospital.

Meanwhile in Cork, two gardaí managed to escape injury when they were fired at during a routine patrol at a travellers’ halting site in Cork city overnight.

Gardaí said that a stolen VW Golf followed gardaí officers, who were driving an unmarked patrol car, into the area off the Carrigrohane Road shortly after midnight.

A gunman, believed to have been armed with a shotgun, then opened fire from the back of the car over the heads of the two gardaí as they began a foot patrol.

An investigation into the attack has been launched, however no arrests have yet been made.

The VW Golf was found abandoned nearby a short while later and the halting site remains sealed off for forensic checks.
