Eldery Woman Driven Off In Car Highjack
An elderly woman has been left shocked after the car she was in was hijacked from a petrol station.
The car thief took off with the 72 year-old female passenger still seated in the front passenger seat at the time.
The terrified woman was later ordered out of the car more than a mile away from the hijacking scene, at a garage in Balla, near Castlebar, Co Mayo.
Although shocked, the woman was otherwise unharmed.
The car theft happened after a couple pulled up to a petrol forecourt in the small town of Balla.
When the driver left the car, the raider jumped into it and sped off.
Some time after the incident the stolen vehicle was recovered at the Tesco car park, in Castlebar, and a male suspect was arrested.
A man was being detained yesterday at Castlebar garda station under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act in connection with the unauthorised taking of a vehicle.

Garda Appeal For Witnesses To Fatal Castlebar Road Accident
Gardaí have appealed for witnesses to a fatal road traffic accident in Castlebar on Thursday. An 18-year-old woman was seriously injured when she was hit by a car at about 17:00 on the Castlebar to Claremorris Road. She was taken to Mayo General Hospital where she was pronounced dead at 23:30.
