Home-Made Gun Recovered In Limerick

A young man arrested in connection to the discovery of an improvised weapon in Limerick has been released from garda custody.

The home-made handgun was recovered by gardai during planned searches in the city yesterday.

Four rounds of ammunition were also recovered at a property during the searches in the Garryowen area.

The 17-year-old was arrested shortly after midday and taken to Henry Street Garda Station where he was detained and questioned under Section 30 of the Offences Against the State Act.

He was later released and a file is being prepared for the Director of public prosecutions.

The searches were conducted as part of ongoing efforts to tackle gangland crime in Limerick.

Meanwhile, in a separate case, a 17-year-old youth has appeared in court in connection with an assault on three gardai in County Limerick last May.

The teenager - who has been remanded in custody - is charged with multiple assault and public order charges following the incident in Newcastle West.

Two male gardai and one female member of the force were off work for a number of weeks following the assault, which took place when they were called to deal with a public order incident in Newcastle West.

The teenager - who cannot be named for legal reasons - appeared before the vacation sitting of Mallow District Court in Cork yesterday where he was charged with three counts of assault causing harm and a number of offences under the Public Order act.

He was also charged in connection with a burglary at a house in Newcastlewest, which is alleged to have taken place on Monday.
