Ex-Christian Brother Charged With 138 Counts Of Sexual Assault
A former Christian Brother has been charged with 138 counts of indecent assault on boys at a primary school in Limerick city more than 30 years ago.
Séamus Treacy, 70, of Ashton Close, Swords, Dublin, appeared before Limerick District Court yesterday on the charges which concern 13 alleged victims.
He is charged with 138 counts of indecent assault on boys at CBS primary school and at St Enda’s swimming pool between 1978 and 1981.
Judge Eugene O’Kelly refused a request for reporting restrictions, saying the case was one of “considerable antiquity” and there was no question of the alleged victims still being minors.
He granted free legal aid “in view of the extreme seriousness and multiplicity of the charges” and remanded Mr Ashton on bail until July 24.

A retired consultant surgeon has appeared in court accused of indecently assaulting 16 young males over three decades at Our Lady's Hospital in Drogheda. Dr Michael Shine, 80, of Wellington Road in Dublin, was charged with 25 counts of indecent assault. He denied all 24 charges, and he said he was not in Ireland at the time of the other charge.

Three former teachers of a missionary order boarding school have been charged with the indecent assault of a number of pupils over a 20 year period. The charges come at the end of a two year investigation carried out by gardaí, following allegations of abuse at Coláiste Chroí Naofa in Carrignavar, Co Cork from the late 1960s on.

A 62-year-old nun is on trial at Sligo Circuit Court charged with indecently assaulting pupils at a national school in the midlands in the 1970s. Sr Mary Theresa Grogan, formerly known as Sr Peter, has pleaded not guilty to 63 charges of indecently assaulting seven young girls, mostly in a classroom in the school between 1973 and 1977.
