Bank Averts Strike Action
Bank of Ireland workers have called off potential strike action at head office, planned for next week.
The protest would have resulted in 600 Unite members joining the picket line.
Today, union officials revealed an agreement had been reached between its members and the bank.
Bank employees are now set to receive a 3% cash bonus in lieu of the stock issue, which the company had previously withdrawn.
Assurances have been reportedly put in place to avoid a similar matter occurring again.
The dispute, which became increasingly public, had come to a "fair result", according to Unite's Colm Quinlan.
Mr Quinlan, who met with the bank today, said: "This was an avoidable dispute and we can now get back to the good work which our members do in securing a positive future for the Bank."
The Bank of Ireland has accepted today's recommendation, and welcomed the Unite's pledge to suspend the strike.
The Irish Bank Officials Association said the proposals were a significant advance.
Strike action was expected for Tuesday, and would have lasted 24 hours.
Staff will now ballot on the proposals over the coming weeks.
Tempers were flared when a 2005 agreement, which stipulated staff would receive up to 6% of salary in gain share bonus payments, was not honoured.
The bank had made the deal on the proviso that cost cutting and earnings per share targets were met.
